Jazz Convention: Matteo Pastorino - Lightside by Fabio Ciminiera

An expert quartet, nine original compositions conceived in a fluid and modern way, in balance between modern solutions and respect for traditions, the expressive possibilities of the bass clarinet: these are the main ingredients of Lightside, the new work as leader by Matteo Pastorino, created together with Domenico Sanna, Dario Deidda and Armando Luongo.

The typical sounds of the bass clarinet immediately direct the atmospheres designed by the quartet: Pastorino confidently develops his musical ideas and, song after song, finds connections between classical accents and jazz styles, explores freer and more informal passages, tackles refined harmonic solutions in an essential vision, conducted without being taken by the taste of complication as an end in itself but rather placing at the center of the objective the general sense of the story and the emotions to be transmitted. The clarinetist then establishes a close dialogue with the musicians involved in the quartet: the experiences acquired in their respective paths as leaders of training and in collaborations offer a concrete contribution to the construction conceived by Pastorino, an important and functional support in the accompaniment and in the exposition of the themes and a series of substantial solo always well calibrated on the structures proposed by the compositions.

A mature work, Lightside, capable of welcoming the reflections of the European musical panorama, the ideas coming from meetings and memories. A work that marks above all a further step forward in the path of a musician who since the beginning of his career had stood out for a personal and anything but obvious approach
