Doppio Jazz Magazine : "Lightside by Matteo Pastorino, a first class return trip" by Cinico Bertallot

"...Each composition by Pastorino is built on refined structures, designed to give space to the interaction between the companions, to favor the melody and to enhance the quality of the "voices" of his line-up, in order to favor immersive listening. A complete work magnified by the refinement and originality of an unconventional language and a creative metric that leverages an archetype capable of showing new directions to the soul, generating chiaroscuro contrasts and continuous emotions. The project was born within the 2021 Time in Jazz Festival. Italy is a land of saints, poets and navigators, but also of jazz musicians, often too anchored to the classical tradition or excessively rooted in their culture of origin. On the other hand, "LightSide" embraces a language and a jazz module with an international edge, without precise references, suspended in that immense ocean of memories that is the history of jazz, with some gusts of mistral with an indigenous flavor and some Northern European gusts. All this to demonstrate how the future, not only of jazz, must be answered in the migratory flows and diasporas that tell of richness and diversity. Thus «LightSide» is not dissimilar to the return from a long journey in memory and time, outside of all time and beyond all latitude. The refinement of the compositions and arrangements is enhanced by the circularity and interplay of the entire line-up. Without a doubt, Pastorino's album, for its thematic significance and sonic expansiveness, deserves a place of honor among the most significant releases of this first part of 2025."
