The Mellophonium Magazine: Recensendo Beyond Motion di Katarina Kochetova - Review by Adriano Ghirardo

For a couple of years, unfortunately, the word Ukraine has been associated with images of destruction and opposing nationalisms. It is a great pleasure, therefore, to discover the talent of this young pianist born in Kiev but raised in Serbia and daughter of saxophonist Max Kochetov, also published by A.MA Records and already reviewed on this site. If thereis international music that manages to unite different experiences and nationalities in a common project, it is that of African-American origin and the songs composed by Kochetova are influenced by the best contemporary jazz. Even the formation present in "Beyond motion" reflects this even geographical opening: the Swede Hugo Lof on double bass and the Brazilian Matheus Jardim complete the basic trio while, in four of the eight songs present on the album, the saxophones of the Slovenian Jure Pukl and of the Brazilian Joander Cruz. A fine piano touch that combines classical knowledge with jazz harmonies, an original instrumental and compositional style that is not affected by Eastern European traditions and opens up to universality are the characteristics of a musician we will hear about for a long time. Among the songs that strike you at first listen, we point out “UntitEled#4”, already chosen as the anticipatory single of the album”, the touching “Balladfor Natasha” and the eponymous song which testify to Kochetova's compositional variety.
